Christmas is upon us! A time for family, festivities, and fun! A perfect time to share some traditions and holiday cheer from our hometown of San Antonio, Texas.San Antonio has so much to offer visitors and residents year-round, but we wanted to highlight some of the unique opportunities that make the holiday season so special here.
The annual HEB tree lighting ceremony is now in it’s 32nd year. The 55-foot Christmas tree that marks the beginning of the holiday season in downtown San Antonio is erected on Alamo Plaza before it’s highly anticipated unveiling and lighting ceremony. More than 10,000 red, white, and green lights as well as handmade gold and silver ornaments will make Alamo Plaza sparkle throughout the holiday season. The San Antonio River continues to be the top tourist attraction in the city. The River Walk is home to many restaurants, bars and places to stroll and enjoy the holiday scenery.Thousands of holiday lights adorn the River Walk while cultural festivities promise an unforgettable getaway. Along the river, almost 200 trees are wrapped with twinkling lights and 20 stone bridges are colorfully illuminated with various patterns. The City of San Antonio holds a Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest that encourages downtown business owners to compete for the most decorative and creative use of LED lights. The result is a lit up river and street that combines for one magical holiday destination.
The Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony kicks off the holidays along the San Antonio Riverwalk. You can bring your whole family down to watch as 28 decorated floats go through the river in this unique nighttime parade. The trees along the Riverwalk, and the bridges, will be illuminated with thousands of lights. This special event highlights a San Antonio landmark and will help all ages get into the festive spirit.
Another special event you won’t want to miss on the River Walk during December is the Ford Holiday Boat Caroling. Watch as groups of boats travel down the river singing holiday songs and traditional carols. There are over 185 school, church, company and civic choral groups performing throughout the month. This event is free and allows you to take in the sounds of the season while strolling the twinkling banks of the Riverwalk.
On the weekend don’t miss the The Ford Fiesta De Las Luminarias. This features more than 6,000 luminarias, which are candles in sand-filled bags, along the San Antonio River. These are part of the Mexican Christmas tradition of “lighting the way” for the holy family. Teams of volunteers make this display possible for the citizens of San Antonio to enjoy every holiday season.
If you didn’t get enough lights downtown, you can hop in your car and drive through the neighborhood of Windcrest, where their light display contests never disappoint. Each year has a theme and the homes participate by illuminating their yards to the wonderment of all who drive by.Need a theater fix? San Antonio is home to some incredible theaters including the Majestic, where at Christmas you can find The Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker, as well as holiday concerts and shows all season long.
If you miss out on the Nutcracker Ballet at the Majestic, you can still get your fill at the brand new Tobin Center. This classic tale comes to life with Ballet San Antonio and the San Antonio Symphony. It’s the perfect family traditional Christmas show.
You shouldn’t visit San Antonio without a visit to the Pearl. What once was a brewery is now a hot spot of shopping, eating and even lodging at the new Hotel Emma. The area is as rich in historic value as it is in unique local fare.
The Pearl hosts many events, but Tamales at Pearl, a holiday festival, has established itself as one of San Antonio’s top holiday events. Located along the River Walk extension, Tamales at Pearl offers delicious tamales from over 40 vendors, live music and plenty of fun for the whole family. This festive event is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays, as well as the rich culture of San Antonio.
