Shades of Blue

Today we’re looking at the different shades of blue and how beautifully they can be used in the world of jewelry and interior design. Blue is the most popular color in the world. It’s safe to say that blue will always be in vogue wherever its used because its popularity admits everyone.

The shades of blue used in this living room evoke feelings of peace, elegance, style, and timelessness. Its amazing how the right mix of blue can create a perfect aura.

Jewelry is a subtle and chic way to add blue to your everyday look. Our new matte turquoise beads are so unique. The vibrant gold and pastel blue play well off of each other making for an attractive balance.

Our Venetian glass jewelry is another stylish way to add blue to your wardrobe. These pieces of jewelry contain our signature designs etched into real Venetian glass. The stunning blue glass is surrounded by gold and just glamorous.

Light and gentle tones of blue aren’t only common in jewelry, they are also used in interior design. Many designers create the perfect atmosphere for a bathroom with lighter shades of blue. Light blues can create a relaxing and soft look which makes for a fabulous bathroom!

Navy is probably one of the most common shades of blue that we see. This heavier shade of blue is perfect when you want to add a pop of blue amongst neutrals- whether it be an outfit or a room.

Cobalt blue is the boldest shade of blue. It’s a brighter and stronger which makes it’s color have a profound appearance. The crystal pendant pieces below are new to the line and come in 5 colors! Love!

Cobalt blue is a popular color accent in jewelry and also interior design. See how the wallpaper really pops and adds dimension to this room! Cobalt blue is perfect for when you want to make an outfit or space special.

The rattan earrings below are part of another new collection. All these pieces are so fun for spring and summer!

Are you a fan of the blues?! We hope that you love our new unique blue Susan Shaw pieces!

The Many Sides of the Coin

This year has some great trends in store. Jewelry is bigger, more fun and more interesting. Coins are topping all the jewelry trend lists right now, but the best part of our coin collections are that they’re classic. They have been a part of our line before they became trendy and they will be around after.

Some of our newer coin pieces have freshwater pearl accented settings, which really bring an elegant look to the coins.

The two tone look of the coins and gold settings is also a trend this year. Mixing metals is ok! So no more worrying about your silver watch and your gold earrings, you can wear it all together!

All of our coins have European roots. This bee coin was a really neat find. It comes from Italy. The creation of the Euro really left a lot of neat coins to become part of history- or part of your jewelry!

The semi precious stones give a totally different look to the coins- its a little more unique and fun.

The all gold look is also a beautiful way to wear coins. I could see these pieces below with a nice outfit for going out to dinner as much as I could see it with a white button down and jeans. So much versatility!

Our Venetian Glass coins are so unique. They give a glamorous twist to the coin pendant.

The multi-coin look is definitely a statement. Perfect for when you really need a standout piece to make your outfit special.

Cotton pearls are a great addition to the coin jewelry as well. These bold pieces will elevate any look.

If you are a fan of coin jewelry, have you always been? Or is it a new obsession? Either way we hope you enjoy our unique coin designs!

Playing with Color Classics: Fresh Takes on Tradition

Today, we’re taking it back to the classics. And by classics, I mean we’re talking about a trend that has never gone out of style, and never will.

Ok yes, that was a pretty bold statement, but I think we can all agree that the colors black and white will forever be a prominent color for every woman’s wardrobe, handbag, and home.

 Black & White

These traditional colors when said together may stir the memory of old television programs or drive-in theaters, or maybe they have you thinking of a “spotted puppy coat,” said best by Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians. Ok now, that might have taken a dark turn! But even this fashion mogul herself was consistently portrayed in black and white, even down to her unrivaled hairstyle! Ok, that’s beside the point.

The real point to drive home is this:

Black and white portrays timelessness. The class and elegance in the simplicity and traditional use of these colors makes them stand out above the rest. Black and white can portray more meaning than any color if we let it. We all have a significant draw and deeper emotion that is stirred when we see these two either separated, or paired on our clothes or in our homes. Most impressive, however, these colors will always stand the test of time. Can other colors say that? (Didn’t think so!)

“Hold on! What if I express myself based solely on the use of vibrant colors that express my everyday mood and relay the fact that I am a power to be reckoned with?!” (*flips hair*)

I figured someone may have an argument for my very powerful and one-sided argument above. And kudos to you, because women today need to be unique, powerful and confident in all shades on the color wheel from the bold to the muted.

So here’s the best part about black and white… Their most powerful weapon against the other colors is that they are “friends,” with everyone! Both black and white can be paired with any color on the color wheel and create a look that could be straight out of Vogue.

Often times, black and white is the base for an outfit or design that just, “needs a pop of color.” Can anyone relate? This is the power of black and white. It’s so versatile and lets you be unique with the ability to make a look modern or traditional, using it with or without a pop of color or pushing the boundaries by combining different patterns.

One of our fashion favorites is pairing black and white with accents of gold. This can create a look that turns heads wherever you go. These are some of our favorite pieces that can make your monochromatic look stand out in any crowd.

Thanks for reading!

Spotlight on Richmond, Virginia

Our travel spotlight shines on a city so rich in history that it’s name, Richmond, is only fitting. It is the capital of Virginia, but is also commonly referred to as the “The Capital of the South.”  Richmond’s 400 year history has included notable events in the Revolutionary War, Civil War and Civil Rights Movement. In present day, the culture of the city is drawing tourists left and right to enjoy the art scene, food destinations, famous breweries, and much more. We will highlight for you some of the best things to do in Richmond and, of course, point you in the right direction to shop our jewelry alongside the latest fashions.

If you’re into scenic biking or walking, the Virginia Capital Trail is where you want to be. It is a 52-mile dedicated multi-use trail connecting Richmond and Williamsburg along the beautiful and historic Route 5 corridor.

After a days exercise, you deserve a cold beer or cider from one of Richmond’s famous breweries. There are over 30 breweries in the area including some very famous ones like Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, Stone Brewing, or The Veil Brewing Comany. Mekong, a famous beer bar, is known nationwide for offering 50+ tap selections and 200 bottle offerings alongside delicious Vietnamese food.

The Art Scene in Richmond is another draw for visitors and highlight for locals. One of the most famous museums there is the Virgina Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). They have an incredible permanent collection that is free to the public. Their collections include Art Nouveau and Art Deco, English silver, Fabergé, and the art of South Asia. The Valentine is a museum, dedicated to the rich 400 year history of Richmond that dates back to the beginning of our country. Come get to know Richmond and regions history- you will not be disappointed!

Not a fan of museums? Come to enjoy the Street Art that Richmond is becoming famous for. There are over 100 murals around the city for your enjoyment.

Richmond is also considered a top culinary destination according to Conde Nast Traveler and National Geographic. While there are hundreds of fabulous places to dine, here are two places we know you won’t want to miss.

Wild for Tortoise and Leopard

We’ve never really needed a reason to wear tortoise styles and leopard prints, but if you do, it has never been more on trend than it is this season. We have lots of lucite tortoise pieces to share with you in new and classic styles! We also have some fun leopard print inspiration for your wardrobe and your home!

These tortoise bar pieces below are some of our newer designs. They really bring a modern touch to the classic look of tortoise.

The horse bit and other equestrian pieces are perfect for pairing with an elegant pair of leather riding boots.

The combination of gold and tortoise is one of our favorites and such a warm addition to your fall wardrobe!

There’s no doubt you will be seeing a lot of tortoise as well and leopard prints in fashion this fall. We put together a little collage below of some statement leopard and tortoise pieces you can add to your wardrobe now!

But your closet is not the only place leopard can make a statement! Leopard prints are taking over the home too! Below is a photo taken in Susan Shaw’s home. She found this vintage leopard rug at an antique flea market in Paris and it makes a wonderful accent piece to her fireplace area below.

The living room below photographed by One Kings Lane, shows how bold animal prints can really add dimension to your space.

Leopard rugs and stair runners are also a great way to use these bold prints in your home.

Here is the same fabric from the stair runner above on an accent chair.

Even in something small like a single chair or pillow, leopard print will make a big impact in your interior design.

So do something bold and add some animal print and tortoise to your style!

Go Wild!

Layers of Style

One of the big trends this season in both clothing and jewelry is layering. While our pieces are designed and handmade to stand alone, we have found many of them to be perfect for layering and achieving a really unique look. The possibilities are really endless as far as combinations you can put together, but here are a few looks we came up with. Mixing types of pearls below creates an elegant look in a fresh new way. Some of our new delicate bee pieces are perfect for this trend. You can bet this look below will get a lot of buzz! We love the combination of these different chains and different gold pieces for a more casual look. The tiny genuine turquoise beaded chain below would mix well with any of our gold necklaces. We love the dainty little cross with it and the teardrop earring to blend it all together.

Layering isn’t just for jewelry! One of the major trends on the runways this season is layering clothing. Mixing patterns and textures is the goal. Below are a few runway examples we saw during fashion week.

But how does that translate to real life style? Well, fall is just getting underway and we are excited for the change in weather and wardrobe. As it gets colder I think we will see more of this trend on the streets- with people layering for warmth, but with a different twist. For example, wearing pants under a dress instead of tights creates a new and unexpected look.

Also layering different textures and patterns in the same color family is a really cool way to show off this look. Fashion icon Blake Lively pulls off this look to perfection below. But what about using this trend for a more classic look? The 3-layer look below is chic and practical for the fall and winter weather to come.Play around with prints, colors and unlikely combinations, while staying in line with your own personal style. That’s the real fun in following fashion trends- making it your own!

How do you wear your Susan Shaw Jewelry? No matter the answer, we hope you have fun with layering our pieces with your wardrobe this season!

Colors of Fall

Summer days are gone and the cool breeze of Fall is moving in. With it it will bring new beginnings, like the start of school, football season, pumpkin spice lattes (or pumpkin spice everything), and the beautiful colors of the leaves as they change and fall. And fashion can have a new beginning, too. Color trends shift with the season and we are ready! So what are the colors of note this Fall? According to Pantone, the swatches below represent the nuetrals of Fall 2018.

But if you aren’t a fan of all the neutrals you are in luck this season. Colors are rich and bold this Fall. Pantone especially pointed out the 10 shades below as the trendy colors for the Fall.

Pantone’s “Nebulas Blue” and “Quetzal Green” are well represented below with our new peacock blue agate and teal agate stones. We have teal tassels too!

More Pantone shade like “Meerkat,” “Tofu,” “Russet Orange” and “Quetzal Green” are represented in this new collection of pieces below. These fossil stones (as they are called) are so beautiful and unique and mix beautifully with the geometric gold components.

Our Tassels and Tortoise pieces below show off the neutrals like “Buff” and “Meerkat.” Tortoise is huge this Fall! It’s so fun and goes with everything!

We love the bright colors in the mix this Fall. Bright red or “Valiant Poppy” mix so well with the “Quiet Grey” neutral. You can check out both these color combos below with our Labradorite stone jewelry and our beautiful red genuine coral pieces.

What’s your favorite shade this season?

Wishing you and your families a wonderful Fall!

Ocean Blues and Coral Reds

There are so many bold and beautiful colors trending this year. Aqua and Red make up a fun combination of contrasting hues that we are really enjoying right now. Found in nature in the most gorgeous underwater reefs, bright red coral and the cool blue of the water make a stunning combo. The fashion world is picking up on this combo for sure. This look below is from the Escada Pre-Fall Collection. The aqua pops so beautifully against these bright red pants. We can play this game too! Our bright red tassels would add the perfect pop to an aqua outfit and our sea glass beads would be a cool way to accessorize your red ensemble. Our aqua Venetian Glass intaglios are a dressier take on this coastal look and our genuine coral pieces are a fabulous shade of red!

This coastal color combo is making waves in interior design as well. Check out the chic red and aqua decor in the living room below. Gold makes a great accent with these colors as well. The bedrooms below use aqua and red so successfully with shades of white incorporated to make a calm and sophisticated setting.

Nature’s Beauty

One of the hottest trends we’ve seen lately happens to be one of the most natural. Indoor plants and leaf prints have been springing up in interior design and we can’t get enough of it. One of the newest parts of our line is also a big part of nature: the bee. Bees have been represented in our line for years but we have recently added new bee pieces, including our first 3-dimensional bee, in order to refresh the look even more. We want to share with you our latest nature-inspired designs as well as some beautiful nature-inspired interiors. The newest bee designs are surely creating some buzz!

In addition to bees and flowers, our line has added some new tropical leaf pieces as well! The tropical leaves are a huge part of this nature-inspired trend. Whether it’s the banana leaf, palm leaf, or fig leaf, you can find these prints on wallpapers and fabrics alike. Checkout this gorgeous headboard! It would make you feel like you were on a tropical vacation year round!Leaf prints can add another texture dimension to a room and freshen the look almost immediately.

You can even partake in the tropical trend with your dinnerware! What more fabulous setting could there be for a summer dinner party?!

No matter your sense of style, the endless variations of leaf prints can fit right in. These next two prints mix pink in with the greens for a more playful and feminine touch.

On the other hand, this slate blue variation is a more subdued and artistic version of the trend. If you aren’t into the prints, the real deal may be more up your alley. Indoor plants and succulents are a great way to bring the nature look to your space.

Our nature-inspired jewelry is a great way to try out this trend without any redecorating!

Is your love for nature growing? We hope you enjoy some time outside this summer, but if not, you can bring the nature right into your home or your wardrobe with this trend!

Happy Summer!

Spotlight on Austin, Texas

Our travel spotlight shines on the capital of Texas, the hip city of Austin, which should be on every traveler’s list of go-tos.  Susan and her husband Eric know Austin as the home of their alma mater, the University of Texas, and the place where they met! In addition to being home of the UT Longhorns (hook ‘em horns!) Austin is known for its music scene, hipster culture, and some big Texas history. Check out some of our best ideas on where to stay and what to do in Austin- and don’t worry we won’t forget to mention where you can find our jewelry too!First things first, where to stay? Austin has some incredible options no matter what you are looking for. For the unique and charming, try the Hotel San Jose, a 1930s motel turned upscale and hip hotel. The South Congress area where it is located is a fun and walkable area full of shops and restaurants.

For an upscale Texas vibe, the Driskill Hotel in the heart of downtown is a wonderful option. Longhorn heads, brass and leather accents make this hotel unique while their amenities dazzle. Now for the luxury escape, the Four Seasons on Ladybird Lake is the place to be. The restaurant serves a brunch worth the stay alone and the quiet spot on the lake provides a restful retreat for guests.

The best part of a trip to Austin is the endless activities you can enjoy. Austin is a very active city so much of these involve being outdoors. You can join these active Austinites for a walk, bike ride, or even kayak on Lady Bird Lake. The city of Austin created this reservoir of the Colorado river in 1960. It is located right in the center of town and is used mainly for recreation and flood control. The 10 mile trail around the lake is perfect way to start your day.

At dusk, this same area becomes an attraction for an entirely different reason. 1.5 million bats live under and around the Congress street bridge (part of the trail), making it the largest bat colony in the world. If you come in late summer you’ll have the best chance of seeing the bats fly. At dusk they go to collect their food all at once, making it a spectacle worth seeing. The only way to combat the heat of Texas is to take a plunge in the cold water at Barton Springs. Austin’s hip version of a public pool, these natural springs feed a 3 acre pool and keep it at about 68 degrees. The pool is surrounded by lots of grassy areas so bring your picnic blanket and enjoy the people watching as much as you enjoy the-cool off.

Now you can’t forget about the music scene in Austin. There are many places to see live music, including the oldest continuously running club in the city, the Continental Club. They have been open since 1955 and have housed bands over the year like Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble, Robert Plant, and so many more.

With all this Austin fun, you are sure to work up an appetite and the food options here will not disappoint. Austin is known for some of the best barbecue in the country and Franklin’s is definitely the most popular spot. You’ll have to wait in the line that almost always extends down the block, but if you find yourself without that kind of patience, ditch the line for a food truck barbecue option that is equally tasty. Micklethwait Craft Meats is just a few blocks away near downtown Austin and serves up delicious BBQ on picnic tables at their cozy outdoor spot.

Very few will argue that Uchi is among the best restaurants in Austin. When you need a break from barbecue, come try the upscale and inventive Japanese cuisine. The combination of flavors in every dish is surprising and balanced and worth the high price tag. Want something beyond sushi? Uchiko is their sister restaurant with a few more options and just as delightful.

Launderette is another place that is constantly making the top lists. Offering more casual café dining, this former laundromat serves up Mediterranean fare that will make you clean your plate!

Now we promised to tell you where to find our jewelry in Austin so we’ve listed a couple spots below you won’t want to miss.

Embellish nail salon was opened in 2008 by two University of Texas graduates who decided Austin was in need of an upscale nail salon without the spa price tag and with a fun twist- a boutique inside as well. We love having our jewelry in this wonderful establishment so if you need a refresher on your mani/pedi or just want to peak at all the fun accessories and clothing they have to offer- pop in to one of their 3 locations around Austin!
